The present church was built in the
mid 1860’s and consecrated in
1866. This was at the instigation of the MacLean family of Lazonby
Hall. The architect was Anthony Salvin. It replaced an earlier
medieval building of which little record remains.
1167 is the first record of a
church in Lazonby. In 1272
Lazonby Church was ’given’ to Lanercost Priory and the first
recorded priest dates from this time. Described as a “simple
building of Lazonby Sandstone” the old church was later covered
with rough cast giving it a ‘modern appearance’. The total
length, including bell turret and chancel, was little more than the
present nave.
The church has a number of fine
carvings in oak by a former Rector,
Canon Wilson 1877 – 1920. A visitors’ leaflet and a listing of
priests is available in the Church.
